Album: Ethan's Visit (08/13/04)

On my very last day as a co-op for NASA, I pulled together a handful of tours so Ethan could see some of the neatest places at JSC: Ellington Field, the NBL, the old Apollo Mission Control, the current ISS Mission Control, the Building 3 Cafeteria, and (of course) my building, Building 4, where the astronauts, spaceflight training division, and flight control division all work.

Ahh, the anniversary of a monumental event in human history: a perfect opportunity to ditch the office, eat ice cream, drink Tang, and enjoy the sunshine with your friends.

The second time I got to go on tours of the Neutral Buoyancy Lab and the Advanced Space Propulsion Lab was much more satisfying than the first because my tour guides were so much better. Thanks, Jackie! You, however, will just have to look at the photos and wonder what the hell is going on.

When I showed up at Ellington and didn't see any other co-ops standing around, I started to get worried. Jason, however, was kind enough to give me a great tour even though I came on the wrong day! Later that day was an actually-scheduled tour of the Astromaterials Lab.

The Systems Engineering Simulator tour gave us the chance to try our hands at operating three spacecraft simulators. I believe the three simulations were (1) docking the station and the shuttle, (2) manipulating the station arm, and (3) flying/landing the shuttle.

Lots of my friends were on a JSC/Gilruth softball team, so I'd come and cheer them on from the dugout or the bleachers on occasion. They rarely won, but everyone always had fun.

Album: Chris Kraft Lecture (10/21/03)

Chris Kraft was the first NASA Flight Director, making him something of a legend around JSC. He spent most of his lecture denouncing the CAIB report and insisting that we push forward with space exploration. The setting for his lecture was the wonderful historic Mission Control; note the Space Center Houston tourists behind glass in the fourth photo.

Franklin Chang-Diaz is building a plasma engine (the VASIMR) that could get humans to Mars in about four months. His brilliance drew a crowd of us co-ops up to Rice to hear him give a lecture. Jason, Carolina, Jared, and I killed time beforehand eating cookies.

A favorite tradition amongst the co-ops is the semesterly watching of Apollo 13 in the Apollo-era Mission Control. It's really something to watch that movie both where it was taped and where the events upon which it is based took place.

Ginger Kerrick is one of my heroes. She's achieved amazing things in a male-dominated environment through persistence, intelligence, creativity, and strength of spirit. She's also incredibly cool, funny, friendly, and humble. AND she's feminine and beautiful. Ginger Kerrick is living proof that a woman can be everything wonderful all at once.

Album: Beach Party (04/04/03-04/06/03)

Every semester, the JSC co-ops organize a weekend-long party on the beach, aptly named Beach Party. My first BP was extremely fun (Ethan was there, and Julie and Jeff came too!), until we all got terribly sunburned on Saturday afternoon. In the fall, Ethan and I pooped out after one day and cheerfully retreated back to my apartment in Clear Lake. And my third semester, we couldn't even go to BP because we were moving into the Duval house that weekend. But BP2k3 will always live on in my heart and mind, including when the Co-op Program Director and Assistant Director showed up early Saturday morning and teased two of the co-ops through the door of the room they had been "sleeping" in.
